Contrast / ANSI lumen
Short and sweet: the higher the contrast the better the projected picture. That's why the contrast, where the relationship between the highest white level and the black level is measured, is one of the prime quality levels that a projector has to take.
The contrast in turn stands in interaction with the brightness. It is measured in ANSI lumen. ANSI lumen is the American measurement for data and projectors named after the "American National Standards Institute" and from the Latin for light.
How light intensive - for example - how light a projector has to be, depends on the size of the projected picture. The larger the picture, the lighter the projector has to be. Although, a higher, stronger light affects the black value negatively and consequently also the contrast. Therefore, it is recommended to watch HomeCinema in a darkened room. In these circumstances, the ANSI lumen value could turn out to be less. The "rule of thumb" is that with a picture size of about 2.5m in a darkened room, a light strength of 600 to 1,200 ANSI lumen is sufficient.
